Golden Phoenix Information

Tucked along West Main Street in Rapid City, Golden Phoenix at Golden Phoenix is one of those places that locals seem to quietly rely on when they’re craving familiar, comforting Chinese-American dishes done right. The location itself is easy to find, with convenient parking and a no-frills exterior that doesn’t try too hard to impress, which somehow makes stepping inside feel even more authentic.

The menu is extensive without being overwhelming, covering all the staples you’d expect-sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, fried rice, and a solid lineup of combination plates-but what stands out is the consistency. On a recent visit, the General Tso’s chicken arrived hot and crispy, coated in a sauce that balanced sweetness and spice without leaning too heavily in either direction. The portions are generous, easily enough for leftovers, which is something many reviews tend to highlight as a major plus.

Inside, the atmosphere leans casual and relaxed. It’s not trying to be trendy or upscale, but it’s clean, comfortable, and welcoming. You’ll see a mix of regulars grabbing takeout and families settling in for a sit-down meal, which says a lot about its role in the local dining scene. Service tends to be efficient and friendly-orders come out quickly, and staff are attentive without hovering. It feels like a place where the focus is firmly on the food and the experience rather than presentation.

One thing worth noting is how dependable the flavors are across different dishes. The egg rolls have that satisfying crunch, the wonton soup is light but flavorful, and even simpler items like steamed dumplings are prepared with care. While it may not push culinary boundaries or offer a modern twist on traditional cuisine, it delivers exactly what most diners are looking for: hearty, familiar meals at reasonable prices.

For anyone passing through Rapid City or locals looking for a reliable spot, Golden Phoenix fits comfortably into that category of go-to neighborhood restaurants. It’s the kind of place you return to not because it surprises you, but because it rarely disappoints.

What People's Say About Place

Instead of catering, we ordered 15 dishes for my father's memorial. The food was amazing and everyone loved it, but I could tell she was too busy multitasking when I had gone in earlier that week to put the order in (which was a surprise to them when we called at 12:45 the day of to check on it) because we got *two* small containers of Fried Rice ... for 15 dishes. I had also asked for half steamed/half fried and got just fried. This was my dad's favorite place to go to lunch with anyone he possibly could. We spent many Chinese New Year parties there. My dad would have been thankful for all the work they put into it, so thank you.

My son and I love to come here to bond over some good food.our favorite is the house chicken! Mmmm mmmm good!

The food and service was good and fairly cheap. For $14 each my boyfriend and I got the combination dinner, which includes your choice of soup, an egg roll, fried rice, a crab angel, and your choice of 16 different entrees. The food was hot and seemed fresh. My vegetables in my sweet and sour chicken were not cooked however. The crab angel was decent but a bit chewy and more cheddar tasting. The service was fairly good but it took forever to get the check and boxes. They also charged around $4 for a soda. Overall, pretty good for your money but nothing to write home about.

The food wasn't that great, 3 stars at best. I had never seen a wonton soup with dark broth and ham before. The 3 delights dish I ordered had a very strong bamboo shot taste I didn't like. The hot and sour soup just tasted only of black pepper. The Mongolian beef and the egg rolls were good. The lady that served us was very nice and did a great job and the restaurant was clean so they get and extra star for that.

Food is OK, wo ordered 3 dishes, they almost the same, both use same sauce. But it's better then some other American Chinese food.

Great service and food. Better then our local Chinese restaurant.

Absolutely amazing food and the best service around!!!! If you walk away hungry, it's your own fault!! Hot and Sour soup is the best we've had!! Ask for some plum sauce for the crab angles and egg rolls!!! Cynthia and her crew are AWESOME!!!!
